Research and planning-usic video

My music video will be Pixies, Where is my mind. The song length is 3:55 minutes so it fits into the time frame. There is a HQ version for the song that can be compatible with Premier Pro. I am choosing this song as I feel the tonal feel of the song is an interesting one to tackle for a music video as it is a slightly surreal song.

Lyrics

Oh - stop

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind? [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

I was swimmin' in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
But they told me, he swears
Tryin' to talk to me, to me, to me.

Where is my mind? [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind? [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

Oh
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Oh
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Oh
Oh

The song was written by Frontman Black Francis after he went Scuba diving in the Caribbean. The lyrics in the song are really literal at times from lines like "I was swimmin' in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rock, Except the little fish". The meaning and narrative is about a swimmer losing his mind whilst swimming and marvelling at the animals in the sea. It's a totally different World and it's as if the snorkeler is thinking over his life because of it. It's a song about the good things in life, taking you away from the real World for just a few minutes. The way in which the lyrics are said feel other Worldly deliberately to connote this feeling of relaxation and resting.
However the imagery in the song is almost surreal because of the way in which the lead singers vocals seem distorted and almost hard to hear what they are at times. Almost like it is in someone's head where they have lost their mind. This theory of the imagery of the song probably was started by the use of the song at the end of Fight Club, 1999 in which the main character has a split personality and has lost his mind. The genre and style of music is grimy grunge punk. It has a garage feel to it. Nothing is over processed, everything sounds natural and raw. The song has a slow pace in which even when the song gradually gets louder it still retains a slow pace.

The look of the Pixies is very natural and subdued. Unlike other rock or punk groups they don't overdress and aren't covered in makeup like a lot of bands. They look like a group of normal people who don't want to give too much attention to themselves. The themes of their songs contrast deeply with the bands lyrical themes of almost David Lynch surrealism, extra terrestrials and old testament brutality, yet it fits in with their surfer rock aesthetic. The look of the band clearly inspired bands like Nirvana or Pearl Jam with their natural subdued look.

Their existing music videos are quite grungy in nature, like Debaser in which the visuals are quite disturbing and mirror the dark tone of the song. It's black and white cinematography and surreal use of Mise-En-Scene emphasizes this.  Inter cutting footage of the band playing live, dark surreal imagery and lyrics of the song. The cutting is really fast so the imagery is never focused on too much. The hard tone of song suits the video. Dark areas or places people wouldn't venture too are usually the areas where the bands music videos would take place and this video cements that.

Whereas something like Velouria, which is the same sound as a lot of their songs yet the music video is quite different to their other songs. It is just one shot but slowed down so much that the one shot takes up the entire length of the song. It is a cheap solution as a very simple shot which in normal speed would be around 12 seconds won't be expensive at all to shoot.
