Research and planning; E4 and the brief

Part 1:

E4 is a British television company owned by Channel 4. However Channel 4 and E4 are publicly owned channels paid for by advertisements, in the advert Krishnan Guru-Murthy states this. So it means that the public doesn't have to spend money on license fees. Unlike the BBC where the public has to pay license fees. It does mean though that E4 doesn't get to face complaints head on as it's handled through OFCOM.

E4 has been around since 2001, it was intended as an alternative to Channel 4 for a younger teenage audience. Originally it was a digital channel add on which was subscription based. On the 27th of May 2005 it became a part of freeview making it better for advertising.

The programmes most commonly shown on E4 are The Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, 2007, The Cleaveland Show, Seth Macfarlane, 2009, The Inbetweeners, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, 2008, How I Met you Mother, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, 2005, Skins, 2007, 2 broke girls, 2011.

The main demographic for E4 is 16-24. It is a predominately a young audience as the content which is aired on it is typically light hearted comedies like The Big Bang Theory, comedies aimed at British teenagers like The Inbetweeners and hard hitting dramas which features teenagers such as Skins and Glue, 2014. They also have reality T.V like Made in Chelsea, 2011 which is aimed at young females.

Skins which is aimed at a teenage and young adult audience.

The secondary audience would be an audience of generation Y so 25-35 year old's. They'll be the audience that watched E4 when it started so it is a familiar channel to them. Formerly F.R.I.E.N.D.S, 1994 used to be on E4 back in the 2000's to early 2010's. Come dine with me is sometimes shown on E4 and that show wouldn't necessarily be a teenagers type of programme.

Come dine with me is aimed at a more adult audience.

The other channels owned by Channel 4 are More 4 which shows more American adult shows like The Good Wife, 2009. Film four which as long as being an original channel is a film distribution company. They've distributed films like 12 years a slave, 2013, Steve McQueen and Trainspotting, 1996, Danny Boyle. Then the channel 4music airs shows around the top chart music.

Trainspotting, 1996, Danny Boyle was distributed and produced by Film Four.

Part 2:

Esting are 10 second videos designed to attract attention to E4 with brand identity and are often a unique way for aspiring film makers to share their voice with the World. Estings can range from live action, stop motion, CGI or hand drawn animation.  E4 tends to make their own Estings for once a T.V show has finished or is about to start. The Estings that are fanmade are usually shown in between adverts to keep audience attention.

Sloth party is a a comical esting with a bunch of sloths being DJ's and sticking their tongues out. From what I've guessed sloth party has used a mix of stop motion and computers. The background has been made in a computer but the sloths themselves are paper cut outs. At one pint you can see a sloths flat back showing that it is a paper cut out. The animation does look professional however. It is obviously aimed at a more younger audience as sloths are animals that are particularly liked as they are cute creatures. Plus the DJ's are a thing that a young audience will be attracted to. And the tone of the Esting is quite comedic.

What I liked most about the animation was how it manages to be very funny and looks simples, it still looks very professional. Also I find it really funny as it is so surreal and random.

Zomb-E-Sting is interesting as it has clearly been made on a computer and is intended to look like an 8-Bit video game from the 80's. It clearly has a nostalgic feel attracting an older audience of 25 year olds+. It has elements of horror, fantasy and Sci-Fi attracting the audiences of those genres. It still has a lighthearted feel accessible for any audiences though.

I liked how the Esting has a certain charm to it and the Nostalgia it projects. It will be able to attract a slightly older secondary audience to E4 especially people in their 30's+.

SingSinger Sing 2015 is a strange and surreal Esting which I think would be primarily aimed at an older audience of maybe 25-35 year olds. It does have comedic undertones in it, however the strange appearance of claymation head mixed with the music may be too eerie for a younger audience. The genre is a little too hard to nail down as a lot is going on in the 10 second video.

I liked this Esting as it is creative, the camera movement is diverse. The soundtrack is strange and eerie. Plus the animation looks professional compared to some other Estings.

Part 3:

In my lego stop motion I intended to make a short in which a giant robot ends up shooting a Spider-man mini-fig. I'll admit it was a little bit improvised but I feel in the time in which I was given I did well with what I had. It is a little bit shaky and too quick but for a first try it isn't too bad. You can see decent movement and a little bit of attention to detail.

:
Live action shtop motion.

Overall the animation went well. However instead of doing it frame by frame I shot it in a continuous shutter which gives it a motion blur effect. So to improve next time I'll definitely do it frame by frame.

Part 4:
I'll aim to make a live action stop motion as I feel I'll be able to manipulate it better then lego or claymation. Plus some of the ideas I have I would have to make in live action would be much better as I'm not as great as using lego or clay.
